Abstract:  Intelligent Reflecting Surface (IRS) is a new wireless communication technology that can achieve smart radio propagation environment via passive and tunable signal reflectors. Due to its low hardware and energy cost with a large number of reflecting elements, IRS enables very powerful beamforming solutions for future B5G/6G communication networks. In this talk, a joint beam training and positioning approach for IRSs assisted mmWave communications is presented. First, we derive the optimal angle of arrival (AoA) and angle of departure (AoD) of the IRS communications channels and the optimal reflection pattern of IRSs. Then, by sorting the reliability of the estimated AoA, AoD pairs, we propose an iterative positioning algorithm to acquire the accurate position of receiver. The advantage of the proposed approach is verified by experiments and enables IRS to be practically deployed for mmWave communications.
